Russia looks to re-route EU gas

January 2nd, 2009 by andrewjohnsonblog

Russian gas giant Gazprom says it can no longer depend on Ukraine as a transit route to the EU and is looking to develop alternatives.

In a BBC interview, the deputy chairman of Gazprom, Alexander Medvedev, said he hoped EU countries would back the move.

Gazprom cut off Ukraine’s gas supply on Thursday in a row over payment.

The firm has since accused Ukraine of stealing gas, however Ukraine’s state energy firm said Russia was not sending enough gas to ensure the EU supplies.

Ukraine’s state gas company, Naftogaz, denied illegally siphoning Russian gas, saying it was ensuring the export supply.

Ukraine has insisted it will not interfere with gas transported from Russia to other states via its pipelines, as it has enough gas in its reserves to look after its own needs for some time.

Hungary and Poland said pressure on their pipelines had dropped.

Naftogaz said earlier it was diverting some gas to maintain pressure in the pipeline network.

Negotiations

In his first foreign interview since the gas was cut off to Ukraine, Gazprom’s Alexander Medvedev dismissed the suggestion his company was deliberately picking a fight with Kiev.

Instead he said Gazprom was ready to end the dispute immediately - but there was no-one to negotiate with.

“We are ready to enter negotiations day and night, but they probably have other tasks than to solve this problem because they are not in Moscow,” he said.

Ryan s daughter

Mr Medvedev said Gazprom has gone out of its way to ensure supplies of gas to Europe are maintained.

He said the problem was not with Russia, but Ukraine, adding “that’s why we believe it’s necessary to develop, as soon as possible, alternative transit routes”.

The alternatives he talks of are two new pipelines Russia is planning to build that will by-pass Ukraine on their way to Western Europe.

The Nord Stream gas pipeline would run under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, and the South Stream link would pass under the Black Sea.

The BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Moscow says this latest dispute is expected to give those Russian plans a significant boost.

The Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency, said it would call a crisis meeting of envoys in Brussels on Monday to discuss the row.

Pipes across Ukraine carry about a fifth of the EU’s gas needs. A similar row between Gazprom and Ukraine at the beginning of 2006 led to gas shortages in several EU countries.

Week 15 Fantasy Football Predictions - Quarterbacks

ah! many of you who are until this playing fantasy football are doing so because you’re in a deep race for the your fantasy football championship. it being week 15 of the nfl season, some of you are really staring your championship game today if you compete with in 2-week playoff format. so for those of you vying for the coveted illusion football league championship, here are my fantasy football predictions for week 15, starting with the quarterback location.kurt warner, arizona cardinals vs. minnesota vikings ? hope for my curb kurt warner to have a brilliant game against the vikings. while the vikings may take a shot their hardest to margin keep away from warner by handing the ball off the adrian peterson, there’s definitely little they can do when warner in truth does journey by the ball in his hands. the vikings secondary continues to remain distrust, and that’s not the adjective you want describing your defensive backs when they are about to face larry fitzgerals, anquan boldin, and my pick for this year’s mvp endowment, kurt warner. expect kw to go off for at least 250 yards and 3 touchdown passes, because i only can’t convoy the vikes slowing down this offense.donovan mcnabb, philadelphia eagles vs. cleveland browns ? after that debacle in cincinnati, i didn’t think i’d be saying this again, but donovan mcnabb is in for a big game in week 15 of fantasy football. he’s going up against a browns defense that is unequivocally mediocre and ranks among the league’s worst in sacking the quarterback with just 15 sacks in 13 games. because of that, i’m count on mcnabb to have plenty of time in the pocket, which should result in mountains of important plays for the eagles. which makes immaculate sense, because the browns are tied because 11th in giving up pass plays of 20 yards or more (36), so i hope for mcnabb to own more than his square share of explosive pass plays that should rack up the stats benefit of your fantasy football line-up.peyton manning, indianapolis colts vs. detroit lions ? do i reciprocate really have to accoutrements this situation. it should be really easy to tolerate why manning is usual to have a field day with this lions defense. the lions’ pass defense is giving up a staggering passer rating of 108.2 against opposing quarterbacks! yes! 108.2! that is just ridiculous. if they are giving that up on average, just imagine what a geezer like peyton manning is wealthy to do to them! look, i’m all for the sake of the lions getting a win before this season is outstanding, but if it happens against manning and the colts in week 15 of make-believe football, let’s just say i’ll be very surprised. i’ll also be pretty surprised if manning doesn’t go for at least 300 yards and a couple of touchdowns against this lackluster pass defense that can’t ban anybody?nevermind a manning.

Seasons greetings

December 24th, 2008 by andrewjohnsonblog

On Christmas Day, most of us pick up the phone and give our friends and family a seasonal greeting.

But for people in remote locations, sending a festive message is not always an easy thing to do.

Twenty years ago, the only options were a crackly long distance call or a letter sent six weeks early.

Today, advances in technology mean that even if you are in the middle of the ocean, or half way up a glacier, there is always a way to send a message home.

So rather than making a good excuse as to why this year’s Christmas card did not arrive on time, here are some of the technological solutions on offer:

E-MAIL

For many, this is the cheapest and easiest choice. Electronic mail covers the entire spectrum, from basic text message, through to sound and movie files.

As long as you have got an internet connection and a means of getting online, then an electronic season’s greeting can be sent with just a few clicks of a button.

SMS / TEXT MESSAGE

Short Message Service’s - or SMS’s - are almost as versatile as e-mails, enabling users to send photos and short video clips, as well as traditional text messages.

The popularity of the service has skyrocketed in recent years. According to the Mobile Data Association, more than 1.4 billion texts were sent in the UK every week in 2008, which is more than the entire number of texts sent in 1999.

According to data from the Mobile Data Association, from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day last year, 6,466,506 video and picture messages were sent.

SMS is available anywhere there is a regular cellular network, although unlike e-mail, users have to pay for every message sent.
